Berlin can boast more than 80 museums. Here you can see such world-known masterpieces as Nefertiti bust, a great collection of Rembrandt works and the treasures of the ancient East. There are few city with such full archeology collections. For almost half a century Berlin was separated into two parts and some museums duplicate each other. For example, there are two Egypt museums, two museums, devoted to the city and so on.

In Eastern Berlin there was created the Museum Island, where the most interesting museums of this part of the city are concentrated. Its construction was begun in the first part of the XIX century by the Frederick William IV of Prussia. The island includes The Old Museum (Altes Museum), The New Museum (Neues Museum), The Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie), Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, today called Bode Museum and Pergamon Museum.
Pergamon Museum
Pergamon is the most visited Berlin museum. The building was established in 1912-1930. Its main exhibit is Pergamon Altar. Some other interesting objects are Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate. The museum also boasts Chinese porcelain, Japanese ceramics and samurai armor of XIX century.

Old National Gallery
December 2001 the restoration of the Museum Island reached a significant milestone with the much-celebrated re-opening of the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery).

Bode Museum
It's named after the first director of the royal museums - Wilhelm von Bode. The painting gallery exhibits the collections of the works of the Italian masters of XIII century, and the works of the Dutch artists of the XVI-XVII centuries. There is also a department of the Ancient Egypt with beautiful art object of different periods.

The Old Museum (Altes Museum)
It was the first museum, built on Museum Island according to the plans by Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It was here where Frederick William III first made the Antikensammlung, the Prussian collection of antiques, available to the public. This collection is now in part exhibited in the Old Museum again.

The New Museum (Neues Museum)
The New Museum was built in 1859 according to plans by August Stuler. During World War II it was nearly destroyed, and the restoration promises to be complete only in 2009. Visitors will see the collections of Egyptian and pre-history, just like before the war.

Dahlem
The museum is housed in a building of the beginning of the XX century expanded in 1960s to add ethnographic collection to the collection of the European art. Nowadays the museum has several large departments.

Egypt museum (of East Berlin)
Small museum with one of the greatest masterpieces of the ancient Egypt - Nefertiti bust. The museum keeps one third of all the Egypt object in Berlin.

New National Gallery (Neue National Galerie)
It possesses art objects of the XIX-XX centuries. Glass hall is often used for the temporally exhibitions. Here all the leading art styles are represented - French and German impressionists, surrealists and others.
