2007-06-28 The exhibition "The abc of Pictures" (Das abc der Bilder) is
organised within the context of the Year of the Humanities with its main topic
"The ABC of Humanity". It is opened at the Pergamonmuseum June 27th –
September 9th 2007 and covers a curious theme topical for both arts
and history – it is the role of language and scripture in visual arts, from
ancient to present-day times. The exhibition presents works of art (such as
painting, calligraphy, sculpture, photography and video art) from historical,
archaeological and ethnological collections, arranged into six sections. If you
are interested in history, this is your chance to find out what roles script
played in arts. They were used not only to fulfill artistic functions, but also
to deliver pictorial narratives, messages and secret pictorial codes. The
tradition of pictorial messages is still widely used not only in art, but also
in television, advertising and other spheres.
