2007-07-14 Pergamonmuseum presents an exhibition “Greeks –
Scythians – Amazons” which will be of particular interest for those who are fond
of ancient history. Amazons were mythical all-female warriors. Greeks thought
that they lived at the edge of the world, to the north of the Black Sea. But
during the times of classicism, this territory was inhabited by the Scythians
who had political and economic contacts with the Greeks. The result of this
interplay was a new culture - the Bosporan Kingdom, that appeared here in 5th
century BC. The exhibition at the Pergamonmuseum examines these three cultures,
their relations and self-identification, with an additional look at the Amazons,
who were both a part of the Greek and the Scythian history. The exhibition
highlight is the computer-based simulation of the "three brothers kurgan", a
burial mound which was once erected on the eastern Crimea, but is now
demolished. Opened till July 14 – October 21 2007.
