2007-07-27 “Myth and Power – Relief Images in Precious Stone
that Stand Out” is an exhibition at the Altes Museum dedicated to one of the
most beautiful pieces of art invented during the times of antiquity – cameos.
Cameo is a small relief carved of precious stone, which appeared in the
3rd century BC. Since then, cameo has been the symbol
of luxury and prosperity, worn as a jewellery or placed into a metal frame.
Those were not only rulers, but also gods and goddesses depicted at cameos,
which made these articles even more significant. Probably that is one of the
reasons why these articles have survived ancient times and were never buried.
The exhibition at the Altes Museum represents some cameos from the Berlin
Collection of Classical Antiquities as well as the ones lent by the Art
Institute in Chicago. There are ancient masterpieces as well as modern ones. The
highlights of the exhibition are copies of the three largest and most famous
cameos of antiquity, created by Gerhard Schmidt. Exhibition is opened 27 July -
28 October 2007.
