2007-09-04 The Bebelplatz, Berlin is a place of great historic
importance for the German culture. It was here that in May 1933 soldiers of the
Third Reich burnt around 20,000 books by many outstanding authors. Probably that
is the reason why Berlin International Literary Festival is held right
here. The festival is an annual event which attracts great amount of visitors who can meet
famous authors, listen to poetry readings, enjoy wonderful concerts and film
screenings. Authors from all over the world come to take part in the event. The
festival is divided into several sections like Literatures of the World,
Kaleidoscope, International Children’s and Youth Literature, Latin American
Literature. There are also some supplementary activities provided such as
readings in prisons, in the park or in libraries and cafes. The event is
organised under the patronage of the German UNESCO committee and takes place
September 4th – 16th.
