2007-08-29 Current exhibition at the Bauhaus Archive/ Museum of Design
is dedicated to a special building programme that was launched in Berlin during
the Weimar Republic. The programme was based on one of the pledges in
German constitution which said that every German citizen had a right for
“a humane dwelling place”. To incarnate this principle, there were
numerous settlements constructed all around the country, with many German
modernist artists taking part in the project. Nowadays the most outstanding of
these buildings got the “historic monument” statuses and are protected by the
government. Some of them, like Falkenberg, Schillerpark and Hufeisensiedlung
Britz have been nominated to be included in the World Heritage List. The
exhibition “Berlin Settlements from the 1920s” is focused on these monuments. In
addition to the exhibition, there will be guided tours around the above
mentioned settlements organised September 8th and 9th.
