2007-09-12 “Under the Sign of the Golden Griffin. The Royal Tombs of the
Scythians” is a wonderful historical exhibition available at Martin-Gropius-Bau
till October 1st. The exhibition is organised by
the German Archaeological Institute and the Museum of Pre- and Early History. It
will help you get a closer look at how The Scythians, the nomadic people from
the steppes of Eurasia, lived. The Scythians originated at the Yenisei River
and further traveled as far as Central Europe. Herodotus, a Greek historian,
mentions the "Land of the Gold-Guarding Griffins" in Southern Siberia. It is here
that rich, lavishly decorated tombs of the Scythians were found. Among the
objects there were golden furnishings, various articles made of wood, textile and
leather, and of course the mummies, some of which are very well preserved. Treasures of
these magnificent tombs and kurgans (burial mounds) are presented at the exhibition along with
information on new excavation techniques.
