2007-09-29 The weekend of September 29th – 30th is
highlighted with an important sports event, Berlin Marathon, which welcomes
those who are ready to check their stamina. The event was first organised in
1974 and was then called "Berliner Volksmarathon" with only 286 participants
taking part. Nowadays about 35,000 runners participate in this 26-mile (42km)
race. The marathon is already booked so you are not able to take part. However,
it’s a wonderful opportunity to back up your friends and enjoy Berlin’s
attractions, since the route lies past Victory Column, Unter den Linden, the
State Opera, Schlossstrasse in Steglitz, the Botanical Garden and Potsdamer
Platz, and finishes at the Brandenburg Gate. If you are looking for something
innovative, visit the Skating Marathon on September 29th. The
marathon welcomes professionals as well as beginners and promises lots of fun.
