2007-10-11 The exhibition “Charlotte Salomon. Life? or Theatre?”
at the Jewish Museum Berlin will guide you through a tragic story of
Charlotte Salomon’s life. Charlotte Salomon was a German-Jewish artist, who was born in Berlin
but had to move to France where her grandparents lived. Both her mother
and her grandmother committed suicide. To forget about this tragedy, she painted
over 1,300 gouaches with the use of elements from films and comics. Some of those were
sent to the artist’s friend before Charlotte appeared in a death camp where she would be
murdered. The exhibition shows 277 of those pictures and will give you an
emotional overview of the artists’s family, her political background, love
affairs and internal life. Gouaches are complemented by photographs and
documents which relate to Charlotte Salomon. Another part of the exhibition is
an installation by Chantal Akerman, with a stress on a story of her teenage
grandmother, who was murdered in Auschwitz. The exhibition is opened until 25
November.
