2007-11-14 The phenomenon of blasting is described in many sciences. First, it
is physics, which describes blasting as a physical phenomenon. Linguists would
tell you that people often use the words “blasting”, “dynamite” or “bomb” in
their speech (phrases such as “get blown away”, “blow your mind”, “she’s a
bomb”). But why are people so attracted by the process of house demolition? This
question is reviewed in the exhibition “Caution! Blasting Operations!” (Achtung
Sprengarbeiten!) at the Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende (the New Society for Fine
Arts). It explores the explosion as a symbol of powerlessness in the face of
prevailing circumstances and at the same time the process of creating free space
for something new. With this aim artists such as Marita Damkröger, Eiko
Grimberg, Shirin Homann-Saadat, Peter Kees created works that correspond to the
subject. The exhibition is supplemented by interviews with chief blasters,
pyrotechnic experts, architects and other specialists.
