2006-09-01 This year from 1 to 17 September Berlin becomes an arena for a holiday for all who loves music. It is only the second time when the fest takes place, but it promises to be annual. During these days Philharmonie, Konzerthaus, Deutsche Oper and Haus der Berliner Festspiele will host world-class concerts. In 2006, the festival will be opened by the Philadelphia Orchestra who perform works by Pintscher and Mahler. Other highlights include the Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Franz Welser-Möst, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo and the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. The programme also includes three special events. The Berliner Philharmoniker will stage a concert performance of Igor Stravinsky’s melodrama “Perséphone”, the musikFabrik and the vocal ensemble Singer Pur will premiere a new work by Wolfgang Rihm, entitled “Vigilia”. The Staatskapelle Berlin with its chief conductor Daniel Barenboim will present the European premiere of “Notation VIII” by Pierre Boulez.
